What is efficacy?
The performance of an LED Solution (LED board, driver or light engine) is often measured in efficacy. Efficacy is the ratio of light produced to energy consumed, or lumens per watt. It is measured by the number of lumens, often referred to as brightness or light output, divided by the rate of energy consumed.
LEDs can produce two to three times the efficacy of fluorescent lights, and six to 10 times that of an incandescent light source, if operated effectively. Efficacy should therefore be an essential factor to consider when selecting an LED Solution such as a driver or light engine.
Why is efficacy important?
The increased efficacy of LED Solutions, such as light engines and drivers, allows for lower energy costs; this benefit combined with the longer lifespan can deliver a return on investment within two to five years. The evolution of LED efficacy
Impressive gains in the efficacy of LED (light emitting diode) lighting technology have been realized in the past decade, as evidenced by the high-performing products now being exploited in sectors such as retail, education, industrial and beyond. Such has been the impact of these gains, that the US Department of Energy (DOE) estimates that by 2020, commercial LEDs could be as energy efficient as 258 lumens per watt, which could lead to energy savings of as much as 90%.
